Brazil – (World Cup 2014 Olimpic Games 2016)

Published by under Video

Brazil (pronounced /br??z?l/ ( listen); Portuguese: Brasil, IPA: [b?a?ziw]), officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: República Federativa do Brasil, listen (help·info)), is the largest country in South America. It is the world’s fifth largest country, both by geographical area and by population. It is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas and the largest lusophone country in the world. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of over 7491 kilometers (4655 mi). It is bordered on the north by Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and the French overseas department of French Guiana; on the northwest by Colombia; on the west by Bolivia and Peru; on the southwest by Argentina and Paraguay and on the south by Uruguay. Numerous archipelagos form part of Brazilian territory, such as Fernando de Noronha, Rocas Atoll, Saint Peter and Paul Rocks, and Trindade and Martim Vaz. It has borders with all other South American countries apart from Ecuador and Chile. Brazil was a colony of Portugal from the landing of Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 until 1815, when it was elevated to United Kingdom with Portugal and Algarves. The colonial bond was in fact broken in 1808, when the capital of the Portuguese Kingdom was transferred from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, after Napoleon invaded Portugal. The independence from Portugal was achieved in 1822. Initially independent as the Empire of Brazil, the country has been a republic since 1889, although the

OMEGA TV spot welcomes golf back to the Olympic Games

Published by under Video

No one alive today can remember the last time an Olympic Games included golf among its sports. In fact, it only happened twice, once in 1900 and the second and final time four years later. Golf will be reintroduced as an Olympic discipline at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games. OMEGA, known both for its role as Official Olympic Timekeeper and as a leading supporter of international golf, has created a television commercial to welcome the sport back to the Olympic Games. The spot features Spanish golf star Sergio Garcia teeing off from the golf course in Crans- Montana which hosts the OMEGA European Masters each year. The ball’s progress is followed across Europe and across the ocean as astonished observers look up to see it flying over their heads. The ball reaches South America and lands on a green in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where it roles into the cup. The on-screen tagline says, “After more than a century golf returns to the Olympic Games” and closes with OMEGA’s famous logo. OMEGA president Stephen Urquhart talked about the importance of Olympic Games golf to his brand. “We are thrilled that golf will be included as an Olympic sport,” he said. “It is long overdue. All of us are looking forward to introducing our friends from the international golfing world to the Olympic community. This TV commercial is a creative way to bring two of OMEGA’s great sporting passions together.” www.10hs10.com www.10hs10.ch

Rio’s Drug War

Published by under Video

A small war took place last week in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between Brazilian forces and hundreds of drug traffickers holed up in the shantytown complex dubbed Complexo do Alemão. After recent efforts by officials to pacify Rio’s drug and gang-related violence ahead of the upcoming the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics Games, drug gangs struck out last week – attacking police stations and staging mass robberies. After days of preparation, Brazilian security forces launched a raid in the Complexo do Alemão, where between 500 and 600 drug traffickers were holed up. At least 42 people were killed in the violence last week, with security forces taking control of many neighborhoods. A relatively low number of arrests were made, and authorities warn of further conflict as they continue to try and flush out more suspects in Rio’s maze of favelas. Chicago Stunned by Olympic Bid Loss

Published by under Video

The city of Chicago spent tens of millions of dollars over two years in an effort to bring the 2016 Summer Olympic Games to the Midwest United States. Those efforts ended on October 2nd when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted in favor of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. As VOA’s Kane Farabaugh reports, the loss is a stunning defeat for the adopted hometown of President Barack Obama.
