Armed Gunmen Take 35 Hotel Hostages—Rio, Brazil

Published by under Video

Gunmen in Rio de Janeiro start a gun fight in one of the city’s richest neighborhoods when they meet police patrols. Footage captured on a cell phone shows suspects in bullet-proof vests hiding behind a garbage truck. A woman bystander was killed and two police officers were hurt in the exchange of gunfire. After the shootout in Rio’s Sao Conrado neighborhood, they ran into the Intercontinental Hotel. Police swept the entire hotel and arrested ten gunmen, heavily armed with automatic weapons and grenades. A spokesman for Rio’s military police says 35 hostages were freed unharmed. [Colonel Henrique Saraiva, Military Police Spokesman]: “We have arrested ten drug traffickers, seized eight machine guns, five pistols with a lot of ammunition, a grenade. There were 35 hostages and we are checking to see if any drug traffickers have infiltrated them. It is very unlikely, but it could have happened. The hostages include 5 guests and 30 hotel workers.” Violent crime is a major problem in Rio, where heavily armed drug gangs control its many slums. Rio is Brazil’s biggest tourist destination and will host the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic games.

The prospective host city first applies to its country’s Olympic Committee; if more than one city from the same country submits a proposal to its NOC, the national committee typically holds an internal selection, since only one city per NOC can be presented to the International Olympic Committee for consideration. Once the deadline for submission of proposals by the NOCs is reached, the first phase (Application) begins with the applicant cities asked to complete a questionnaire regarding several key criteria related to the organization of the Olympic Games.[144] In this form, the applicants must give assurances that they will comply with the Olympic Charter and with any other regulations established by the IOC Executive Committee.[143] The evaluation of the filled questionnaires by a specialized group provides the IOC with an overview of each applicant’s project and their potential to host the Games. Communities face the threat of eviction in the wake of Rio’s winning Olympics bid

Published by under Video

Following Rio’s selection to host the 2016 Olympics, decades of housing rights were immediately at stake for Rio’s favela communities. More than ever, squatter communities in Rio de Janeiro are threatened with eviction by the authorities for the development of infrastructure for the Olympic Games of 2016, or for reinstatement of land ownership, boosted by the increasing value of Rio de Janeiro’s real estate, or because the government claims the areas are a risk for landslides. This is an introduction to two of Rio’s communities whose residents face the prospect of their eviction in relation to the 2016 Olympic Games. They are Vila Autódromo and Asa Branca, two small and neighboring communities in the West Zone of the city.

I endorse Rio de Janeiro for the Host of the 2016 Summer Games. I think it’s not fair that the entire continent of South America has gone on so long without a chance to host the Summer Olympics.
