Brazil (pronounced /br??z?l/ ( listen); Portuguese: Brasil, IPA: [b?a?ziw]), officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: República Federativa do Brasil, listen (help·info)), is the largest country in South America. It is the world’s fifth largest country, both by geographical area and by population. It is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas and the largest lusophone country in the world. Bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, Brazil has a coastline of over 7491 kilometers (4655 mi). It is bordered on the north by Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and the French overseas department of French Guiana; on the northwest by Colombia; on the west by Bolivia and Peru; on the southwest by Argentina and Paraguay and on the south by Uruguay. Numerous archipelagos form part of Brazilian territory, such as Fernando de Noronha, Rocas Atoll, Saint Peter and Paul Rocks, and Trindade and Martim Vaz. It has borders with all other South American countries apart from Ecuador and Chile. Brazil was a colony of Portugal from the landing of Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 until 1815, when it was elevated to United Kingdom with Portugal and Algarves. The colonial bond was in fact broken in 1808, when the capital of the Portuguese Kingdom was transferred from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro, after Napoleon invaded Portugal. The independence from Portugal was achieved in 1822. Initially independent as the Empire of Brazil, the country has been a republic since 1889, although the …
The city of Chicago spent tens of millions of dollars over two years in an effort to bring the 2016 Summer Olympic Games to the Midwest United States. Those efforts ended on October 2nd when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voted in favor of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. As VOA’s Kane Farabaugh reports, the loss is a stunning defeat for the adopted hometown of President Barack Obama.
An explosion of joy on the streets of Rio greeted the announcement that the city would be hosting the 2016 Olympic games. Two weeks later, and Rio saw an explosion of violence when a police helicopter was shot down by drug traffickers. The governments reaction has been to intensify the crackdown on the citys slums or Favelas. A Human Rights Watch report last month accused Rio and Sao Paolo police of killing over 11000 people since 2003. Many, the report claims, were executed by the police, shot at point blank range. Many were innocent. And on many occasions, the police tried to cover up the evidence. This week, Fault Lines travels to Rio to look at the crackdown in Rios Favelas, and what it means for the people of the city.
Rio de Janeiro has won the contest to host the 2016 Olympics and take the games to South America for the first time after the shock elimination of Chicago in the first round of voting today. There were celebrations on the streets of the city this evening after the announcement by the IOC president Jacques Rogge. Chicago’s early exit was seen as a snub for Barack Obama, who flew to Copenhagen to represent his former home town. Obama, the first serving US president to appear before the IOC, told delegates he hoped that the games would show “America at its best is open to the world”. Michelle Obama arrived two days earlier, alongside other dignitaries including the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and King Juan Carlos of Spain. Today’s 45 minute presentations were the end of a three-year journey for the bidding cities. Tokyo was knocked out in the second round of voting before the IOC voted again to decide between Rio and Madrid. Madrid’s surprising success in reaching the final round came after the former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch made an unusual appeal for the Spanish capital, reminding the IOC members as he asked for their vote that at age 89 “I am very near the end of my time.” The Brazilian president told delegates that Rio’s bid was made on behalf of the whole of South America. “I honestly think it is Brazil’s turn,” he said. “It is South America’s bid. This is a continent that has never held the games. It is time to address this imbalance. It …
