Infrastructure and revenues from tourism look set to get a boost, in a region that has seen international arrivals drop by one percent from January to July this year, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Rio represents the whole of South America to a certain extent. It is the first time that South America gets the Olympic Games. The Rio de Janeiro bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics and Paralympics was recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on September 14, 2007. During a meeting in Athens, Greece, on June 4, 2008, the IOC shortlisted Rio de Janeiro along with three of the other six applicant cities—Chicago, United States; Madrid, Spain; and Tokyo, Japan; over Baku, Azerbaijan; Doha, Qatar; and Prague, Czech Republic. The lengthy and intensive bidding process will be concluded with the election of the host city during the 121st IOC Session, to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 2, 2009.
